Background / History
Clubs
Rob started judo with the PCYCs. Mainly with Randwick Botany, but for a brief time with Eastern Suburbs. Rob joined UNSW when at the onset of his competition career in young men. For some years now Rob has coached various classes at UNSW, assisting John Buckley and Warren Rosser. From 1999 to 2001 Rob was a member of Oxford University Judo Club where he regularly took sessions and coached at the annual varsity match with Cambridge.
Overseas Training
As well as training and coaching at Oxford Rob regular visits to Neil Adams' judo club in Covenrty while living in England. Aside from my his time in the UK, Rob trained in many places around the
world:
* Kodama High School, Nitaidai University, the Kodokan and the Saitama Riot Police training centre in Japan.
* INSEP, the national training center in Paris.
* German national training centres in Koln, Munich and Berlin.
* The Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, USA.
Competition Career
Rob started competing in the PCYC and RSL comps as soon as he got his orange belt. He competed at his first junior nationals at 16 taking bronze in the u/65kg). The following year he was selected for the Junior Worlds in France. Rob won a couple of fights by Ippon and came 11th. After that Rob moved up a division and worked his way through the mens ranks finally winning the Nationals in 94. Rob retired from competition in 1999 after winning various medals at the State Opens, Nationals and Oceania Championships. Along the way Rob represented Australia at competitions in Japan, the US and Europe with a satisfying competition career.
Instructing
Now Rob is involved in occasional instructing at UNSW and at the BBR Academy. After attending 2 Kata courses at the Kodokan Rob has role with the BBR teaching at Kata courses and assisting with Dan gradings. Rob is now the Zenbu instructor for the Terrry Hills dojo and remains to be a great asset to the club.
